Letter to our Patrons
September 13, 2013
As
you may be aware, the Zoo was surprised in August to receive a letter from the
University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine stating that the college
would be severing its 20-year plus professional relationship with the
Zoo. UF officials had not raised concerns with anyone from the Zoo prior
to sending their letter. Additionally surprising was that without the
Zoo’s knowledge the letter had been provided to the news media outlets.
Despite the negative media coverage, it appears to not have acquired much
traction, although just one report seems like too many.
I
am happy to report that we met with our veterinarian on Wednesday, September 11
as scheduled. We want you to know that as with any long-term
relationship, we can’t let communications fall to the wayside. This was
our first face-to-face with our lead veterinarian in some time and we
discovered that many misunderstandings existed. We had a good healthy
conversation, addressed and resolved the issues stated, and we will continue to
share in the care and well-being of the animals here at the Zoo. We are
good enough partners that having a discussion to resolve our issues turned out
to be the best solutions to preserving what has always been a strong
partnership.
We
appreciate your understanding during this time, and rest assured, that our
commitment and priority to our animal’s health and well-being is
paramount. And, that we look forward to a very successful and professional
relationship with the University going forward.
