Range:

Panama and northern Columbia in South America.

Habitat:

Common in valley woodlands and savannahs and in lowlands along the Pacific slope.

Description:

These birds are about 12 inches long. Foreheads are a predominant yellow with beautiful distinctive bluish sheen mixed in the green feathers. Their crown feathers have a triangular shaped patch of yellow on it.

The upper mandible is a light gray at the top and more of a natural bone color near the base and lower mandible. Most of these birds have light colored toe nails.

Diet:

As with most parrots, the Panama amazon is a herbivore. They prefer fresh fruits and vegetables and seeds.

Nesting/Reproduction:

These parrots make a nest by hollowing out a hole in a living tree. The female may lay up to 3 eggs with an incubation period of about 29 days. Only the female will incubate the eggs while the male Panama amazon stays close by.
