Calling all lovers of bluegrass and barbecue! The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens’ Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation has the perfect event for you.
The OCIC will host its first Indigo Bluegrass BBQ fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2022, at its facility in Eustis. Attendees can enjoy an afternoon of live bluegrass music performed by The Blackwater Creek Bluegrass Band and FiddleRat as well as enjoy a delicious barbecue meal provided by Oakwood Smokehouse and Grill with a glass of wine or beer.
The event will benefit the OCIC’s work to re-establish the native Eastern Indigo Snake, which is a threatened species, as well as the Striped Newt. Guests will have a chance to see how their donation will make a difference with a tour of the facility.
But, they won’t have to wait to make a difference. The OCIC will be auctioning off several items from February 14 through February 26 online, including naming rights to indigos and a display of the facilities’ well-known Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Edgar’s, fangs.
“We’re excited to debut this fun event in Eustis,” said Dr. James Bogan, the director of the OCIC. “Not only will it be a wonderful afternoon for a good cause, but we’ll also have the opportunity to give folks a peek at some of the work we do every day for this incredible species.”
Tickets are $50 for couples and $30 for general admission. It is adults only. Guests are asked to park at the Cassia Community Center at 29245 Florida Highway 44, Eustis, Florida 32736, and they will be shuttled to the OCIC for the event.
Sponsors include Publix, SECO, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards, and Thermotane.
