Veterinary Department Externship

Job Overview

Under the guidance of Zoo’s veterinary staff, veterinary student externs will participate in daily medical rounds of the Zoo’s animals, while having the opportunity to practice making diagnoses and offering treatment recommendations. Additionally, externs will get experience with in-house diagnostics and interpreting diagnostic testing.

Our externship program is designed for veterinary students with a serious interest in zoo medicine and nutrition to gain practical experience while helping the Zoo achieve our mission of providing experiences that excite and inspire children and adults to learn and act on behalf of wildlife.

 

Requirements and Information:

  • Students must provide a letter indicating current vet school enrollment, have health insurance, an adequate rabies titer, current tetanus vaccination, and a negative TB test within the previous 12 months.
  • Expectations of the veterinary student during their externship
    • Present 40 hours per week with a professional attitude
    • Appropriate attire consisting of closed toe shoes, khaki colored pants or shorts (no shorter than mid-thigh), and a scrub top or Central Florida Zoo intern polo.
    • Student will also be required to write a case report of one patient.
  • The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens does not provide housing and we do not handle visas.
  • We accept students only from AVMA accredited schools.
